Cosmetic Eye Care at Insight Vision Optometry

Our Aesthetic Eye Care Services

Our Aesthetic Eye Care Services

We offer three core aesthetic treatments for the eye area: Latisse™ for eyelash growth, Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy, and Radio Frequency (RF) therapy. Each treatment is carefully selected and performed by our team with attention to both your appearance and your eye health.

Latisse™ is an FDA-approved prescription treatment for hypotrichosis, which is the medical term for inadequate or sparse eyelashes. It is the only FDA-approved option proven to grow lashes that are longer, fuller, and darker over time.

Our team evaluates your candidacy, provides a prescription, and walks you through proper application technique. We also monitor for potential side effects, which can include temporary eyelid skin darkening, subtle changes in iris pigmentation in some patients, and minor periocular skin changes. Follow-up visits allow us to track your progress and address any concerns early.

Intense Pulsed Light, or IPL, uses targeted pulses of light energy to treat the periocular skin and underlying eyelid glands. It is one of our focus services at the Costa Mesa location.

IPL is effective for reducing redness, broken capillaries, and rosacea-related telangiectasias (dilated blood vessels) around the eyes. It also stimulates the meibomian glands, which are the oil-producing glands along the eyelid margins that play a key role in tear film stability. Most patients follow a protocol of approximately four sessions spaced over several months, with a pre-treatment evaluation and post-care guidance provided at each visit.

RF therapy uses controlled heat energy to tighten the skin around the eyes and stimulate collagen remodeling, which is the natural rebuilding of the skin's structural protein. This can improve periocular firmness and reduce the appearance of loose or lax skin over time.

Like IPL, RF therapy also benefits the meibomian glands by stimulating gland function and supporting a healthier tear film. Treatment is delivered over multiple sessions, and our team customizes the protocol based on your specific goals and skin characteristics.

More Than Cosmetic: The Clinical Side of IPL and RF

One of the most important things to understand about IPL and RF is that their benefits extend beyond appearance. Both treatments have meaningful clinical applications for patients who experience dry eye disease related to meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD).

Meibomian gland dysfunction occurs when the oil-producing glands in the eyelids become blocked or stop working properly. Without adequate oil in the tear film, tears evaporate too quickly, leading to dry, irritated, and uncomfortable eyes. This is one of the most common causes of evaporative dry eye.

Many patients seek IPL or RF for cosmetic reasons and discover meaningful improvement in their dry eye symptoms as well. Our team uses meibography, an imaging technique that maps the health of your meibomian glands, to assess your glands before and after treatment.

Patients with rosacea or facial redness are particularly good candidates for IPL because the same light energy that targets skin redness also addresses the inflammatory process that affects the meibomian glands. Patients with mild to moderate eyelid skin laxity combined with dry eye symptoms often benefit from RF therapy for similar reasons.

Our team discusses both the cosmetic and clinical aspects of each treatment during your consultation so you have a complete picture of what to expect.

What to Expect at Your Consultation and Beyond

Every aesthetic treatment at our practice begins with a thorough evaluation. We take time to understand your goals, assess your eye and skin health, and recommend a plan that is safe and realistic for your individual needs.

At your first visit, our team reviews your medical history, current medications, any prior cosmetic treatments, and your eye health history. We examine your eyelids, periocular skin, and meibomian gland function, and we may use meibography imaging to get a clearer picture of your gland health.

Photographs are taken at baseline for documentation and to track your progress over time. This allows us to show you how your results develop across your treatment sessions.

After your evaluation, our team explains which treatment or combination of treatments is most appropriate for your concerns. We walk you through what each procedure involves, how many sessions are typically needed, what the recovery experience looks like, and what realistic results to expect.

There is no pressure to commit at your first visit. We want you to feel informed and confident before beginning any treatment.

Preparation requirements vary by treatment. IPL and RF treatments generally involve straightforward pre-care instructions such as avoiding sun exposure and discontinuing certain skincare products before your session. Our team provides written instructions so nothing is missed.

Post-treatment care guidance is given after each session. Most patients return to their normal routines quickly, though some mild redness or sensitivity may occur. Our team remains available to answer questions between appointments.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are answers to some of the questions our patients ask most often about aesthetic eye care services.

Yes. Many patients begin IPL specifically for dry eye management related to meibomian gland dysfunction, and the cosmetic improvements to periocular skin are a secondary benefit. During your evaluation, our team will assess both your skin and your gland health to determine whether IPL is appropriate for your situation.

Most patients follow a multi-session protocol, typically around four sessions for IPL, spaced over several months. RF therapy also involves a series of sessions, with the exact number depending on your individual response and goals. Your treatment plan is personalized and may be adjusted based on how your skin and glands respond.

Latisse™ should be applied to the upper eyelid skin at the base of the lashes, not directly to the eye. Contact lenses should be removed before application and reinserted after the product has dried. Our team provides detailed application instructions and answers any questions about safe use alongside your lens-wearing routine.

The most commonly discussed side effects include temporary darkening of the eyelid skin, subtle changes in iris (eye color) pigmentation in people with lighter eyes, and minor skin changes in the application area. These are generally uncommon and are monitored at follow-up visits. Our team reviews your individual risk factors and what to watch for before you begin.

In some cases, combining IPL and RF as part of a staged treatment plan can address different concerns simultaneously, such as pigmentation and skin redness alongside skin laxity and gland stimulation. Whether combination therapy is appropriate depends on your evaluation findings and goals. Our team will discuss this option if it applies to your situation.

Aesthetic treatments are typically coordinated with your overall eye care plan without disruption. If you are also being managed for dry eye or wearing specialty contact lenses, our team takes those factors into account when planning your aesthetic protocol. Open communication between your aesthetic and primary eye care visits helps us deliver the best overall outcome.
