What are Specialty Contact Lenses?

Specialty contact lenses refer to a category of contact lenses that are designed for specific eye conditions or unique visual needs beyond what traditional soft or rigid gas permeable (GP) contact lenses can correct. These lenses are customized to provide improved vision and comfort for patients with complex eye conditions or requirements. At Insight Vision Center Optometry, we use Wavefront guided technology to map the entire surface of the cornea and sclera so that we can design lenses that fit precisely to your eye.

Scleral Lenses: Scleral lenses are larger than traditional contact lenses and vault over the entire cornea, resting on the white part of the eye (the sclera). They are ideal to restore vision to irregular corneas, such as in keratoconus, corneal transplants, corneal scars, post LASIK , or severe dry eyes.

Custom GP Lenses: Rigid Gas Permeable lenses are small diameter contact lenses that rest on the cornea to provide clear vision.  Using wavefront guided technology, we can custom design these lenses for more challenging corneas that standard RGPs would not fit.

Hybrid Lenses: Hybrid contact lenses combine a rigid gas permeable center with a soft outer skirt. They provide the clear vision of RGP lenses with the comfort of soft lenses.

Custom Soft Lenses: Custom Soft Lenses are available for patients with keratoconus and patients with high prescriptions >10.00D. 

High Astigmatism Lenses: Custom Toric contact lenses will allow patients with high amounts of astigmatism to be able to wear contact lenses.  These custom lenses are used when in need of a higher power than what’s available in standard soft toric contact lenses.  These lenses can be soft or rigid gas permeable lenses.

Color-Tinted Lenses: Custom soft contact lenses designed to change or enhance the color of the eyes for cosmetic and functional purposes. Useful for patients with aniridia or when in need of a blackout lens.

Multifocal Lenses: Multifocal contact lenses are for patients with presbyopia, an age-related condition where the eyes lose the ability to focus on close objects. A multifocal lens design can be used in sclerals, RGPs, Hybrids, and custom soft lenses. They allow for clear vision at varying distances, such as near, intermediate, and far without the use of reading glasses. 

Pediatric Contact Lenses: Small diameter contact lenses for infants and children who have a medical necessity to wear contact lenses.  Available for aphakic babies as well as children with high prescriptions and amblyopia.
