What is Dry Eye?
Dry eye is when the surface of the eye (cornea and conjunctiva) lack sufficient lubrication to keep the eyes comfortable and healthy. When the cornea is dry, this can detrimentally affect the clarity of vision as well as the overall health of the eye. Common symptoms of dry eye include:
- Burning
- Stinging
- Redness
- Intermittent Blurry Vision
- Crusting of the eyes in the morning
There are two root causes of dry eye, aqueous deficient and meibomian gland dysfunction. Aqueous deficient is when the eye does not produce a significant amount of tears to keep the surface of the eye well hydrated. Meibomian gland dysfunction is when the meibomian glands do not produce sufficient oils to make good quality tears.
What Are The Treatments For Dry Eye?
Treatments for dry eye can include:
- over the counter artificial tears
- omega 3 fish oils
- lid hygiene wipes/scrubs
- prescribed medications to stimulate more tear production
- plugs to help retain more tears in the eye
- Serum eye drops
- specialty contact lenses
- in office procedures such as Tearcare to promote healthy meibomian glands and oil production
What Is Tearcare?
Tearcare is an effective treatment for dry eyes, especially targeting dry eye symptoms caused by Meibomian Gland Dysfunction. Tearcare is an in office procedure that treats dry eyes by clearing out the meibomian glands of blockage and dirty oils. This stimulates the glands to then produce new healthy oils which creates better tear quality and relief from dry eye symptoms. The tearcare treatment applies localized heat to the outer surface of the eyelids for 15 minutes. This is both soothing and relaxing to the patient. The glands are then manually expressed to remove blockages.
