Eye Care Tips for the Spring Season

It’s always a good idea to give your eyes extra care during the spring season, whether or not you have seasonal allergies. Here are some tips on taking care of your eyes and vision this spring.

Wear Sunglasses When Going Outside

The right kind of sunglasses can help protect your eyes from damage caused by ultraviolet (UV) rays. Whether you’re buying them off the rack or online, make sure you’re sunglasses rated for protection against UVA and UVB rays. Some of them may be labeled with “100% protection against UV 400”. When in doubt, ask your local eye care center for recommendations.

Rest Your Eyes

Getting enough hours of sleep per day is important to your eyes’ health – especially if you’re in front of a computer all day and/or undergoing therapy like orthokeratology – however, it may not be as easy to do when you’re having difficulty adjusting to longer daylight hours. Make it a point to rest your eyes frequently, and use the “20-20-20 rule” if you spend hours in front of a computer screen. Basically, it means you should look away at something that’s 20 feet away from you for 20 seconds for every 20 minutes you spend looking at a screen.

Use Eye Drops

Pollen and other particles tend to increase during spring, which may irritate your eyes when you go outside. If washing your eyes is not an option, use eye drops to keep your eyes hydrated and moisturized as well as provide temporary relief from itching and dry eyes.

Eat Healthy

Many kinds of seasonal eye discomfort can be alleviated with some changes in your diet. Cutting down on sodium-rich foods can help reduce water retention and swelling under the eyes. Foods rich in vitamins A, E and D as well as Omega-3 fatty acids are essential for maintaining eye health. Adjust your diet plan, and include foods like green leafy vegetables and citrus fruits, all of which can be beneficial to eye health.
