This page shares a firsthand journey from wearing glasses at a young age to achieving clear vision through orthokeratology. Follow the steps, challenges, and successes that shaped this personal eye-care story.
Early vision problems led to years of reliance on glasses and contact lenses before discovering ortho-k.
To be honest, I do not really remember a time before I had to wear glasses. When I was five years old, I chose round “Harry Potter” frames to match my dad’s.
Because I loved basketball, glasses quickly became a nuisance. Sports goggles felt awkward, yet regular glasses slid down my face during every game.
In fourth grade I began wearing soft contact lenses all day at school and late into the night for practices and studying. I avoided my glasses because they never stayed up on my nose.
Despite contact lenses, my prescription kept increasing and dry eyes became an everyday problem.
Unfortunately, each yearly visit showed that my vision had become worse. Before starting ortho-k, my prescription was ‑4.75 with ‑1.25 astigmatism in my right eye and ‑5.00 with ‑2.75 astigmatism in my left eye.
Wearing soft contact lenses for long hours caused dryness, especially when I napped with them in place. My tears broke down quickly, leaving my eyes irritated.
After another noticeable prescription jump and persistent dry eye, I was ready to try orthokeratology. I hoped nightly lenses could slow myopia progression and give me daytime freedom from contacts.
Starting ortho-k introduced new routines and sensations, yet the adjustment period was manageable.
The first night was a little uncomfortable, mainly because I had to sleep on my back so the lenses stayed centered. With my eyes closed the lenses felt minor and did not keep me awake.
When I woke up my eyes felt dry, and I worried they might look red. Luckily they appeared normal in the mirror, far better than expected.
Because of dryness the lenses seemed suctioned to my eyes, yet the plunger helped them pop off. My vision was slightly improved but still too blurry to function without glasses.
Regular wear quickly reduced my prescription and brought exciting changes.
After the third night my prescription was cut in half. My usual glasses were now too strong, so I received lower-powered soft lenses and lubricating drops to ease dryness.
At one week my binocular vision reached 20/20, and it was no longer necessary to wear daytime lenses. Clarity lasted about eight hours before objects became fuzzy.
Two weeks in, my optometrist adjusted the fit for better results. The haziness in my right eye began to fade, which felt miraculous given my original high prescription.
Looking back, the experience offered both learning opportunities and gratitude.
If I had known about ortho-k earlier, my prescription might not have climbed so high. The technology reshaped the way I see and how I care for my eyes.
I asked many questions at each visit, and my optometrist always answered them with patience and expertise. His custom lens designs, based on computerized topography, made this success possible.
Orthokeratology proved to be revolutionary for my vision and lifestyle. If you are exploring options for clear sight and myopia control, discuss ortho-k with our team to learn whether it could be the right fit for you.
