Answering Frequently Asked Questions About Vision Therapy

Using corrective eyeglasses or contact lenses may not be enough to correct certain vision errors. Fortunately, Insight Vision Center Optometry offers vision therapy as an equally effective alternate solution. In today’s post, your eye doctors answer some of the most asked questions about this method.

Q: What Is Vision Therapy?

Also referred to as vision training, this is a non-surgical treatment program that involves performing a customized set of eye exercises for a specified period. The actual length of your therapy and the activities involved are based on your personal eye care needs. This may include using prisms, lenses and patches. We may also incorporate 3D pictures, computer software and hands-on tasks.

Q: How Does It Work?

You can think of vision therapy as physical therapy for your eyes. This treatment option focuses on strengthening the working relationship between your eyes and your brain. Repeatedly performing our recommended program can improve your functional and visual perceptual skills.

Q: What Vision Problems Can It Manage?

Vision therapy has proven effective at managing amblyopia (lazy eyes) and other binocular errors. It has also shown positive effects on those with eye movement and alignment problems, such as nystagmus (dancing eyes) and strabismus (crossed eyes). We may suggest incorporating this method into vision rehabilitative programs, and it also helps those with traumatic brain injuries, developmental delays or learning-related vision disorders.

Q: How Do I Know If Vision Therapy Is Right for Me?

Before anything else, we’ll perform a complete eye exam to establish your current vision problem. We may also assess how well your visual and neurological systems coordinate with each other. We may ask you to try other vision correction options as well like prescription eyeglasses or specialty scleral lenses. If we find that vision therapy would be the best method to manage your visual disorder, we’ll then create your individualized program.
