Are Blue Light Glasses Really Worth It?

With so much of people’s daily lives spent in front of screens, it’s no wonder that blue light glasses have become increasingly popular. These glasses claim to filter out the blue light emitted by digital devices, which is believed to cause eye strain and disrupt sleep. But are blue light glasses really worth the hype, or is it just another trend? A trusted orthokeratology clinic breaks it down here.

What Is Blue Light?

Blue light is a high-energy, short-wavelength light that’s emitted by the sun, as well as by many digital devices like smartphones, tablets, and computers. While it’s natural to be exposed to blue light during the day, prolonged exposure to artificial blue light from screens, especially at night, can have some potential effects on your eyes and sleep patterns.

How Blue Light Affects Your Eyes

Many people experience eye strain after spending long hours in front of screens, a condition often referred to as digital eye strain or computer vision syndrome. Eye doctors say symptoms include dry eyes, headaches, blurred vision, and neck or shoulder pain. Blue light is thought to contribute to this strain, though it’s worth noting that research on its exact impact is still ongoing.

Can Blue Light Glasses Help?

Blue light glasses are designed with lenses that filter out or block a portion of blue light. The idea is that by reducing your exposure, you’ll experience less eye strain and enjoy better sleep. While some studies show a mild improvement in reducing digital eye strain, the evidence is mixed on whether blue light glasses can significantly improve sleep quality or prevent long-term eye damage. However, many people report feeling more comfortable when wearing them, particularly during extended screen time.

Other Ways to Reduce Eye Strain

Even if you don’t choose to wear blue light glasses, there are other methods to protect your eyes from strain. Try the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Additionally, adjusting your screen settings to reduce brightness and contrast, using proper lighting, and maintaining an ergonomic workspace can all help reduce the strain on your eyes.
