Webinar: What is Pre-Myopia?

Insight Vision Center Optometry located at Costa Mesa, CA, is at the forefront of pediatric eye health, understanding the importance of early detection and management of eye conditions. With a surge in digital screen use and changing lifestyle habits among children, the topic of pre-myopia has never been more relevant. Recognizing this, we are hosting a timely webinar titled, “What is Pre-Myopia?” aimed at shedding light on this pivotal subject matter.

Defining Pre-Myopia

Pre-myopia is a term that refers to the state of the eye where individuals, particularly children, are at high risk of developing myopia (near-sightedness), but have not yet reached the clinical threshold to be classified as myopic. It is characterized by a refractive state of an eye of ≤ +0.75 D and > -0.50 D in children, indicating a slight hyperopia (far-sightedness) or almost emmetropic (normal vision) state, combined with specific risk factors that greatly increase the likelihood of progressing to myopia. These risk factors include familial history, limited outdoor activity, certain binocular vision parameters, and lifestyle habits such as excessive near-work activities.

Importance of Early Detection and Management

The critical importance of identifying and managing pre-myopia cannot be overstated. Early detection provides a golden opportunity to implement preventive measures that can significantly reduce the risk of progressing to myopia or even halt its onset. Research has demonstrated that for each year the onset of myopia is delayed, the severity of myopia throughout life is substantially reduced. Given that high levels of myopia are associated with an increased risk of serious eye conditions later in life, such as glaucoma, cataract, and retinal detachment, proactive management of pre-myopia is vital for long-term eye health.
