Scleral Contact Lenses: Tips on Taking Care of Them

Scleral contact lenses are one of many forms of contact lenses that can meet the demands of diverse patients and individuals. Scleral lenses are ideal for individuals who have uneven corneas, suffer from dry eyes or have deformed eyes that are difficult to fit with traditional eyewear. They provide the best wearing experience and visual clarity due to their size and unique physical characteristics. What should you keep in mind when cleaning or taking care of your scleral contact lenses?

Hygiene

First and foremost, ensure your hands and fingers are clean before handling your scleral lenses. To avoid getting anything on your lenses, wash your hands with soap and water, and dry them with a lint-free cloth or towel. Proper handwashing will help you avoid issues when wearing your lenses and keep your eyes feeling fresh. The next step is to maintain scleral lens cleanliness. To keep them clear and comfortable, remember that, when you take them from your eyes, rub them with a lens cleaner for a few seconds before rinsing both sides with a saline solution and then finally storing them.

Sleeping

Never sleep with your scleral lenses still on, and remember to take them out before going to bed. When you’re asleep and not blinking, debris on the surface of your eyes that would normally be wiped away by tears gathers on or around your lenses. Dust, germs, protein deposits, lipid deposits and allergens are some of the debris and other things that can be found there. These materials can accumulate and cause inflammation, infection and discomfort in the eyes. Always remember to remove them before going to bed, thoroughly rinse them, and store them in the right container for future use.

Dry Eye

Scleral contact lenses are commonly used by people with dry eye syndrome because they provide significant alleviation from symptoms as well as a pleasant feeling and adequate hydration for the eyes. However, as beneficial as scleral lenses are for reducing dry eye symptoms, it is preferable to have adequate dry eye medications and therapies as they will benefit you in the long run. If your dry eye has become so unpleasant that wearing your contact lenses is becoming problematic, why not try acquiring a pair of eyeglasses that will work best for you?
