Sudden Blurred Vision and What You Need to Know

Blurry vision is a common eye condition that affects certain parts of the eye, such as the retina, cornea or optic nerve. Two kinds of blurred vision can happen to an individual depending on the circumstances. Sudden blurring is usually caused by a single factor or event while slowly progressive blurred vision happens over time due to long-term medical conditions.

The Common Causes

Blurred vision can be caused by several environmental factors, such as frequent use of computers and electronic devices. Apart from computer vision syndrome and digital eye strain, you can also develop blurred vision. This can subside if you refrain from reading from screens for too long and give enough time to rest your eyes.

Blurred vision can also occur if you have a stroke. A stroke can affect the part of your brain that controls vision, which can lead to blurry vision in one eye. Blurred vision can also be caused by a detached retina, which occurs when your retina tears away from the back of your eye. When this happens, the retina loses its blood and nerve supply, and you’ll start to see flashing lights and black flecks followed by an area of blurred or absent vision. Emergency treatment must be done or else you’ll permanently lose vision in that area.

Should You Be Concerned?

This can depend on certain factors like the environment, which can sometimes trigger temporary vision changes that cause blurriness. However, if you’re also experiencing ocular pain and any cloudy spot in your eyes, this can indicate a more serious problem. If this is the case, have yourself checked at a trusted eye care and vision therapy center as soon as possible.

You should also consider having your eyes checked if it happens often and without any warning signs. When this happens, it can be indicative of certain medical conditions, such as high blood pressure or diabetes. If left untreated, it can affect your retinal blood vessels and cause permanent damage to your eyesight!
