What Are the Types of Eye Conditions Caused By UV Exposure?

You might love going to the beach or lying by your pool to get yourself some good sunlight. But without the right protection, too much sun means your eyes get affected by ultraviolet (UV) exposure over time. But what are the common eye conditions linked to UV exposure?

Cataracts

Although most people think that the chance of developing cataracts becomes higher as we get older, constant unfiltered UV exposure accelerates its development. Wearing UV400 sunglasses is the best form of protection, but you should also switch to a healthier diet, such as eating more fruits, vegetables and whole grains to reduce cataract development over time.

Corneal Sunburn (Photokeratitis)

The cornea is the clear front covering of the eye. You could say that it’s the “skin” of your eye, which can also get sunburned after prolonged exposure to sunlight. When this happens, you get photokeratitis, which is a painful swelling and inflammation of the cornea caused by unfiltered UV ray exposure. The usual symptoms are blurred vision, redness, light sensitivity, tearing or general pain of the eyes. To avoid this, most eye doctors recommend wearing proper eye protection, such as hats and sunglasses, when you’re going to the beach or planning to stay under the sun for long periods.

Aging

Not only are UV rays harmful to your skin, but they also cause new wrinkles and sunspots as well. It also loosens the skin around your eyes, and too much squinting from the sun can deepen the wrinkles. To avoid this, always wear sunglasses to minimize damage to the skin around your eyes and surrounding ocular structures.
