What Causes Farsightedness?

Hyperopia, more popularly known as farsightedness, is a refractive error that affects more than 14 million Americans. It’s usually detected during your younger years. Insight Vision Center Optometry, your trusted provider of orthokeratology and other eye care services, talks about this vision problem in detail.

Causes and Risk Factors

Heredity is one of the primary risk factors for hyperopia development. Having family members who are farsighted makes you more likely to become farsighted yourself. This refractive error happens when the gap between the front and back parts of your eyes is too short, causing the received light rays to fall behind the retina instead of directly on it. This may also happen if you have a cornea that’s too rigid.

Signs and Symptoms

Hyperopia’s hallmark symptom is having a hard time seeing things that are near you while you have no difficulties seeing items far away. As a result, you may struggle to carry out close work, such as reading, sewing or cooking. You may also have headaches and eye strain when you try to do so. Experiencing any of these may be a sign for you to visit your eye doctors for a more thorough evaluation.

Our Suggested Management

We’ll perform a comprehensive eye exam to check for signs of hyperopia. This may include a visual acuity test to assess how sharp your eyes currently are and the severity of the refractive error. We may also have you undergo refraction and retinoscopy tests to guide us in prescribing the proper lens power for your eyeglasses or contact lenses.

If you’re looking for a more natural vision option, we may recommend using ortho-k lenses. They are meant to be worn as you sleep, and the technology behind these lenses allows them to reshape your cornea. When you wake up, you may remove the ortho-k molds and enjoy the rest of the day with improved and sharper vision.
