Improving Your Vision With Ortho-K

Myopia, also referred to as near- or short-sightedness, occurs when the distance between the front and back parts of your eyes is too great. As a result, light rays fall in front of the retina instead of settling directly on it. This refractive error may also develop when your cornea is too large or its curvature too steep.

Orthokeratology is a myopia control method gaining popularity nowadays. In fact, a 2017 study conducted by Credence Research showed that there’s an increasing demand for this option in the aging population. Insight Vision Center Optometry discusses how it works.

The Ortho-K Process

Orthokeratology is a non-surgical corneal reshaping therapy that aims to correct your underlying refractive errors. This involves wearing gas-permeable lenses while you sleep. They are precisely engineered to gently modify your corneal shape and surface.

As a result, light rays entering your eyes will be accurately bent and focused on your retina. Your eye doctors explain that ortho-k was initially developed to control myopia progression. Further studies revealed, however, that it’s also effective at managing other refractive errors, including hyperopia (farsightedness) and astigmatism.

Advantages of Using Ortho-K

The Credence Research 2017 study revealed that ortho-k’s high success rate is one of the major reasons behind the increasing demand for this vision correction, especially among the elderly. Using ortho-k lenses nightly is also linked with slowing down myopia progression. Researchers also found that it can help patients achieve a 6/6 vision, which is equivalent to a 20/20 visual acuity.

Another great thing with ortho-k is that it reduces your need to use daytime contact lenses or eyeglasses. Upon waking up, you may remove the ortho-k lenses and immediately enjoy improved visual acuity. Ortho-k’s effects usually last for a whole day.
