Reflecting on a Night of Innovation in Concussion Care

On January 28, 2025, a dynamic group of allied health professionals, athletic trainers, and medical experts gathered at Mimi’s Café in Tustin, CA, for an evening dedicated to advancing concussion care. Hosted by Dr. Valerie Lam, FOVDRA, FAAO, and featuring an insightful presentation by Dr. Elizabeth Hoefer, DC, DCCJP, the event was a testament to the power of collaboration, innovation, and interdisciplinary learning.

A Meeting of Minds in Concussion Recovery

The OC Concussion Consortium brought together specialists from a variety of fields—neurologists, neurosurgeons, chiropractors, physical therapists, occupational therapists, athletic trainers, and optometrists—all with a shared goal: improving outcomes for patients struggling with persistent post-concussive symptoms.

Dr. Hoefer’s presentation sparked engaging discussions about how chiropractic care, the Blair Chiropractic Method, PEMF, laser therapy, and massage therapy can play a role in concussion rehabilitation. Many attendees walked away with fresh insights into alternative treatment approaches for patients who aren’t finding relief through conventional methods.

The Importance of a Multidisciplinary Approach

One of the key takeaways from the evening was the importance of collaboration in concussion care. When medical doctors, vision specialists, rehabilitation therapists, and holistic practitioners come together, patients benefit from a more comprehensive and personalized treatment plan.

Dr. Lam’s expertise in vision therapy and rehabilitation added another crucial perspective—highlighting how concussions can affect vision in ways that are often overlooked. Attendees gained a deeper appreciation for the role of optometry in brain injury recovery, reinforcing the need for cross-specialty communication in concussion management.

Building a Stronger Network for the Future

Beyond the educational aspect, the event was an invaluable networking opportunity. Professionals from across Orange County connected, exchanged ideas, and built relationships that will undoubtedly lead to better patient care and stronger collaboration in the future.

Though the evening has come and gone, the conversations and insights shared will continue to shape the way concussion care is approached in the region. Events like this prove that when experts come together with open minds and a willingness to learn, progress happens.

For those who missed this gathering, the OC Concussion Consortium looks forward to hosting more opportunities for education and professional connection in the future. Stay tuned for upcoming events, and keep pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in concussion care!
