How to Treat Double Vision
What is Double Vision?
Diplopia, also known as double vision, is a condition in which a person sees two images of a single object. The two images can appear side by side, vertically stacked, or diagonal. Diplopia results when the eyes do not point in the same direction. Both kids and adults can experience diplopia.
Common causes of double vision are:
- Age: Older adults may experience double vision due to age-related changes in the eyes, eye muscles, or nerves.
- Eye Muscle Disorders: Strabismus (an eye turn) can cause double vision or other congenital conditions such as a 4th nerve palsy.
- Neurological Disorders: Diplopia can result from stroke, multiple sclerosis, thyroid issues, or brain tumors.
- Trauma or Injury: Head injuries, such as concussions or trauma to the eye or surrounding structures, can result in double vision.
Treatments for double vision can include:
- Glasses
- Contact lenses
- Prism lenses
- Vision Therapy
- Occlusion
- Surgery
